Mayor Piercy Releases Comprehensive Green Economic Plan
For Immediate Release

(Eugene, Ore., April 16, 2008) – Recognizing the success of her first economic plan, Mayor Kitty Piercy has released her second policy paper on shaping our economic future. “Building a Sustainable Economy – Creating Good Jobs and New Opportunities," outlines 12 policy proposals in four key areas:

Creating Sustainable Businesses and Good Jobs
Transportation and Infrastructure Initiatives
City Government Initiatives
Social Equity Initiatives

The full report, as well as an executive summary, are available for download..

One of Mayor Piercy’s first-term campaign promises was to enter office with a smart, sustainable economic plan. Her vision served as the starting point for many activities since her election as mayor, including the Sustainable Business Initiative and the city's Office of Sustainability, as well as the city's new, award-winning strategies for blending the entrepreneurial with the environmental. As a result, in just the last two years, Eugene has been honored for its green business and livability efforts, including:

#1 Green City (National Geographic's Green Guide)
#5 Top Green Cities (Popular Science)
Top 100 Best Places to Live and Launch a Small Business (Fortune's Small Business Magazine)
Top 200 Best Places for Business and Careers (Forbes)

Her latest paper builds on that earlier success. The paper reflects Mayor Piercy’s continuing commitment to business, the environment and societal concerns. “We’ve had some tremendous successes that have been recognized nationally, but this is no time to rest,” says Mayor Piercy. “In light of economic change and increased environmental knowledge, Eugene can charge ahead of the pack with our model of supporting a healthy economy and environment. It’s not a matter of either/or.”

The Mayor’s 12 sustainable economic proposals are:
  • Continue the Sustainable Business Initiative
  • Promote energy efficient construction and green jobs
  • Grow the green building sector
  • Prioritize downtown revitalization
  • Use a comprehensive approach to land use planning and the urban growth boundary
  • Increase alternative transportation
  • Implement solutions for West Eugene traffic and transportation
  • Implement street maintenance and pothole solutions
  • Make city government a model of sustainability
  • Create a web resource for sustainability
  • Expand LTD’s Group Bus Pass Program
  • Implement recommendations on homelessness
