Election 2008: Two Strong Women Fighting for Equality

Greetings, With the national spotlight shining on women in politics, there couldn't be a better time to introduce two champions for equality who are campaigning right here in Oregon: Senator Kate Brown, who is running to become Oregon's Secretary of State, and Eugene Mayor Kitty Piercy. Both candidates are seasoned leaders who have been strong supporters of equality for all Oregonians. Senator Kate Brown has been a tireless champion for equality in the Oregon legislature for more than 16 years, and she played a critical leadership role in passing Oregon's domestic partnership and anti-discrimination laws. As Secretary of State, Kate Brown will ensure that in Oregon, every vote is counted - and she will be the highest ranking out LGBT statewide official in the country. Here's what Kate Brown had to say when the Basic Rights Equality PAC offered its endorsement this spring:

"For nearly the last twenty years, I have fought for equality for all Oregonians. In my race to become Oregon's next Secretary of State, I am honored to have received the support of the LGBT community and look forward to protecting the integrity of Oregon's initiative process. Under my watch, every voice will be heard and every vote will be counted."

Eugene Mayor Kitty Piercy has been a supporter of and volunteer with Basic Rights Oregon since its inception. Kitty is the only candidate in her race for re-election who signed a pledge to publicly oppose right-wing efforts to repeal Oregon's domestic partnership and anti-discrimination laws. In contrast, her opponent, Bush supporter Jim Torrey, blocked an effort to protect Eugene residents against discrimination based on gender identity. While he has tried hard to obscure his right-wing history, Torrey's views have not evolved over time. At a candidate forum this year, Torrey took a page directly from the right-wing's playbook: equating transgender Oregonians with child molesters. Unfortunately, Torrey is backed by big money and this election could be decided by a couple hundred votes. Click here for more information about Eugene Mayor Kitty Piercy
